Subsea Electrical Test System (SETS)

IMES has developed an instrumentation system to enable electrical testing of umbilicals and subsea structures. The SETS was conceived in response to demands for a tool to test for Insulation Resistance (IR) and Continuity Resistance (CR) in the oilfields west of Shetland for BP.

Our Subsea Electrical Test Systems have been commissioned by a number of oil & gas companies over the past few years, these include:

  • BP
  • Shell
  • DOF
  • Noble Energy

Fields where the system has recently been operated by IMES include:

  • Tamar
  • Ormen Langen
  • Foinaven
  • Schiehallion
  • Draugen Field

During multiple deployments in the North Sea and Mediterranean, all our clients, with the exception of DOF, have requested IMES engineers to support their campaigns and operate the equipment; however IMES do provide full training on the equipment to clients who choose to operate using their own specialists.

  • The equipment has been used for a variety of subsea diagnostics including:
  • Base lining the field architecture
  • Checking on electrical degradation of connectors
  • Diagnosis of electrical and communication faults

The SETS can be mounted on any ROV and enables an operator on the Dive Support Vessel to control the voltages and the cores to be tested. A portable laptop computer provides an instant graphical display of the results as well as automatically storing the results in MS Excel format.

The IMES SETS has been used extensively in deepwater operations from West of Shetland through to Ormen Langen and demonstrates our capability to build custom instrumentation that supports our clients’ needs.

By exercising regular liaison with our partners and clients IMES are able to produce bespoke tools and instruments that are right for the job the first time.  At IMES we don’t just develop and deliver technology we are actively deploying with it in support of our customers’ needs around the globe.
